Cabinet of Mine
Overview
Cabinet of Mine is a relief print carved from mdf board. The prompt for this project was the word "collections", but at the time I did not have many things that I collected. I have probably a thousand different polar bear items given to me throughout the years as the default present, but that didn't feel good enough to represent in this piece. I wanted something more meaningful to me, so I decided to showcase a collection of fine china because that is something that multiple generations of my family have collected.
My Mimi has a large wood cabinet full of fine china, family photos, glass sculptures, and various other meaningful decor she has collected over the years. I've grown up staring at this cabinet. I was unable to go to her house and use hers as a reference, so I asked my aunt to send me photos of her cabinet with dishes in it. I combined the two together, using my aunts to decide the framing of the cabinet and placement of the dishes, but added things like the design on my Mimi's plates and other decor in the bottom corners to reference my Mimi.
When my great aunt passed, I asked to take her dishes. They currently sit in a box in our basement, but one day they will be put into my own cabinet. Three generations of collections summed into one.
