Arts & Crafts Cube

The point of this project was to research different eras of design and then create a 8” x 8” cube that represented the art movement. I had chosen the Arts & Crafts Movement, which truly lacked a consistent visual image and instead favored a consistent ideological approach to the movement. The Arts & Crafts Movement was a movement defined by the rejection of the machine in a post-Industrial Revolution world, and pushed for the idea of returning to hand made crafts and artisan work.

Following this idea of returning to the hand-made, I hand embroidered the images shown on the cube. I sketched them out myself then over the course of a few weeks picked colors out and embroidered them on cotton fabric. The imagery was picked with careful thought as well. Shown on the cube are flora and fauna species endemic to Florida that are all directly threatened by overdevelopment of land and climate change. While visually it might not be an immediate “oh this is Arts & Crafts” the careful thought that went into each working piece of the cube was representative to the ideological view of the movement and the passion the artists contained for spreading this idea through their craft.
