In Conversation With

Overview

For this series of eight photos, we were assigned with researching photographers that interest us and using them as inspiration for our own photography that we would appear “in conversation with.” I had researched Lucia Moholy, a Jewish photographer who once worked with the Bauhaus. There, she catalogued their work and took photos of the architecture around the Bauhaus. I also researched her later work where she travelled to other countries to take more documentative photos of people and places.

In Conversation With Lucia Moholy, I took inspiration from her architectural work and especially the usage of shadows. Her photos were made from glass negatives and done in black and white, but I chose to do it digitally in color. I walked around campus and took photos of many different buildings, inside and out, while focusing on angles, leading lines, and the way light and shadow fell into the space. There were many more photos, but these were the final selected ones that I thought captured what I was going for when I thought of her work.
