The Most Mysterious Song Magazine

The most mysterious song on the internet came from this article discussing one of many songs with unknown origins that float around on the internet. What we did know about it is that it was a techno, new wave song made from synths and wispy lyrics. Its origins were believed to be from a German or Polish band around the 80s.
While it probably was not correct, when deciding what to do for this magazine I kept going back to this idea of why someone might purposely choose to remain unknown. Around the time that this song would have been released in the 80s Germany was still split into East and West Germany, and Poland was still under Soviet Occupation. The “Iron Curtain” and rampant propaganda that Soviet occupied countries faced meant controlled media and consumption for these countries. Music that was new and popular outside, especially with references to American sounding synths, could face banning in the occupied territories leading to people sharing music in secret.
The spreads start off in black and white and move to color to represent the disbandment of the Soviet Union and the reunification of Germany. Waved lines are repeated on the cover and inside spreads as a visual reference to what synths to me feel like–this sort of wavy packed shape like a soundwave. On the middle spread before the full switch to color, we see eyes and ears, people are always watching, in both color and black and white to show the movement of occupation to freedom and how that affects music.
