Seething Grief
Overview
Seething Grief is a reduction relief print carved from mdf board. The brief for this project was very open ended; we were given the word "resonate" and had to decide what that word meant to us.
I had thought about feelings that deeply resonate with people, and focused on the anger and grief I felt when I found out my health had not improved after a year of treating it.
The image is of a hummingbird which are often used as symbols of healing and resilience, but the hummingbird is dead and unmoving to signify that there is no healing happening. The background pattern is meant to represent the ridges of an inflamed esophagus which is a direct call to what was affecting me at the time. Then, I hand carved out text that I felt encapsulated what I was feeling. The two large quotes on the side are from Goethe's Faust, but I wanted to include my own writing as well so at the bottom is a sentence to myself and feelings.
