Zoemeda

In Greek Mythology, Andromeda is the daughter of Cepheus, king of Aethiopia, and Cassiopeia. As the myth goes, Cassiopeia claimed that she, or Andromeda, was more beautiful than the Nereids, so as punishment Poseidon sent Cetus, a sea monster, to ravage the coast of Aethiopia. Cassiopeia then chains Andromeda to a rock as a sacrifice, where she would later be rescued by Perseus. Andromeda became a prominent figure in art and literature. However, in many retellings and references she is depicted as a white women—forgetting her origins as a princess of Ethiopia.

This piece was made through mimicking double exposure techniques in photoshop. The head of my friend Zoe was used to replace the head of the statue of Andromeda. The idea was that she was becoming Andromeda. Waves were then layered onto the piece to represent the sea part of mythos, and a radial star pattern was used in the background to reference the galaxy Andromeda.

This piece won the NIU 2021 High School Art Invitational and was displayed at the McHenry County College FVC High School Exhibition in 2022.
